The girlfriend of Russian tycoon Roman Abramovich has dramatically apologised after being accused of racism by posing in a chair that resembled a bound and semi-naked black woman. Art expert and fashion guru Dasha Zhukova, 32, said: 'I utterly abhor racism, and would like to apologise to anyone who has been offended by this image. The photograph showing her sitting in the shocking chair was published 'completely out of context', she said. Outrage: Buro used the horrendously offensive image, pictured, of Dasha Zhukova Monday to illustrate an unrelated interview about the former model's new magazine, Garage. The chair - designed by Norwegian artist Bjarne Melgaard - was 'an art work intended specifically as a commentary on gender and racial politics', she said.
Photo of Dasha Zhukova posing on black woman bondage chair causes offence - Telegraph
New York-based Russian photographer Alexander Kargaltsev has responded to a controversial photo of Moscow gallerist Dasha Zhukova, in which she is sitting on a chair resembling a semi-nude black woman with her legs up in the air. I was forced to flee my native Russia because of ubiquitous homophobia and xenophobia and it deeply saddens me to see that racism is now being glamourised and thus made not only acceptable but trendy by the likes of Ms Zhukova. It caused outrage among bloggers and non-Russian press, in part because it had been published on Martin Luther King Day, a US national holiday to celebrate the civil rights activist. Both Duma and Zhukova promptly removed the photo from their respective Instagram accounts.
Russian Socialite Dasha Zhukova Sat on a Black Woman ‘Art’ Chair [Updated]
In an airy white blouse, art gallery owner Dasha Zhukova poses serenely on a chair, in a photograph taken for a Russian fashion website. The only problem: the chair is fashioned from a contorted lifelike mannequin of a black woman, sparking an internet outcry and allegations of racism. It did not help matters that the photograph of Zhukova — a Russian socialite and the girlfriend of oligarch Roman Abramovich — was published on Martin Luther King Day, a national holiday in the US.
The partner of Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich is at the centre of a racism row after a photograph of her sitting on a mannequin of a half-naked black woman emerged online. Dasha Zhukova provoked outrage after the controversial image of her barefoot and wearing a crisp white shirt and blue jeans while perched on the unusual furniture, was published on a Russian fashion blog on Martin Luther King Day. The insensitive photo was also posted on Instagram by the blog's editor, Miroslava Duma. The image was quickly met with a barrage of complaints from the online community, with viewers slamming it as "sick" and "awful, racist misogyny. Extremely disappointed in Miroslava Duma and Buro for posting this nonsense, especially on a day like today.
